Jackson Racing Supercharger On a Honda CRX

This is my story detailing my install of a Jackson Racing Super Charger (http://www.jacksonracing.com) in my 1991 Honda CRX Si.  The information is provided purely as informational and is not meant to endorse a product or company nor is it meant to provide direct instruction.

The Story Line

One day I was driving down a local road and I spotted a Rio Red CRX that looked just like my other 1990 CRX.  I pulled over and took a look at it.  It looked like it will need some work, the standard stuff - half-shafts, brakes, master cylinder, alternator, A/C work and a few interior parts to put it all back to stock.  I offer the guy $2800 cash and four hours later I go home in my "new" Rio Red 1991 Honda CRX Si.  An exact match for my current 90 Si.  After a few weeks of switching back and forth between my Turbo'ed 1990 CRX and the 1991 CRX I know that I can't leave this thing stock - I need some more power.  Since I really wanted to go Super Charged on my ZC, but there were not any production SC's for the ZC I went Turbo at the time.  This time I was going to do SC.

I found a number of dyno's (149hp@129tq and 167hp@137tq) showing that the SOHC 1.6l stock Si engine was a power horse if done right, plus by staying stock it will be easier to put back (to stock) and find parts (new and junk yard).  So I look at my options for superchargers.  Ok, there really is only one option - Jackson Racing.

May 31 - I call around to all the Jackson Racing dealers listed on their web site (http://www.jacksonracing.com/pages/dealers.html) and get prices ranging from a high of $2800 to a low of $2150.  The "general" low price is anything below $2250.  Don't be afraid to call around and haggle a bit with the sales people.  I order my SC from Modacar (http://www.modacar.com) for $2150 or $2188 with ground shipping.  He even had the item in stock and it didn't have to drop ship it.

Jun 8 - I finally receive the super charger today.  I make sure to snap pictures of everything before opening it all.  I start the documentation process.

Jun 9 - Well I'm not wasting any time.  I have the day off so I start right early at 8:00am while it's still a little cool (it's relative of course in Texas).  The total install start to finish (plus a few trips to pickup things I forgot) was about 9 hours.  Everything went well with the exception that the instructions are of POOR quality (but still better than those on my GReddy Turbo install).  I've included all the "gotca's" that you should run into.  Expect to make a call or two to Jackson's toll-free support line (that was useful but not spectacular).

Jun 10 - Everything seems to be ok with the super charger.  I found one leaking fuel line on the high pressure side of the fuel pressure regulator but a quick replacement of the OEM clamp with a corkscrew clamp fixes it right up.

July 5 - Well it's a done deal now.  I am going to be doing a ground up rebuild on a D16A6 engine that will go in this car.  Today I ordered the "stuff" including belts, seals, mounts and gaskets.  I also finally got the number to Endyn (The Old One) and called them and ordered new forced induction pistons and rods along with a new blower pulley to get the final pressure to over, get this, 11 psi!  I also ordered a Zdyne "Gold" SECU with 450cc injectors - this time I will be able to do some "tuning" with the unit.  Stay tuned - this will be big and you can expect to see some impressive dyno sheets!

Sept 10 - I've finally got the engine rebuilt from the ground-up and so far, so good!  Check the Project Twist page for more information and pricing.  Stay tuned for more performance information once it's broken in.

Well here it is - the install from start to finish.
